An inductor works with one coil of wire around a core. What if you put two separate coils of wire around the same core (Fig. 11-8) When you apply voltage across one of the coils, generating a current in the coil, it creates a magnetic eld. This eld creates the self-inductance discussed above. As the magnetic eld grows, however, it also crosses the wire in the second coil. This moving eld creates a current in that coil. A changing current in one coil creates a copy of itself in the other coil. The two coils don t even have to be wrapped around the same part of the core. The magnetic eld lls the entire core, even the bits that extend outside of the coil. In fact, many transformers look like the one illustrated in Fig. 11-9. The obvious experiment to try is to change the number of loops on one side of the transformer. What happens then The transformer acts like an electromagnetic gear. When the coils have the same number of loops, the output matches the input in terms of current and voltage potential. If there are more input loops, or windings, than output windings, the magnetic ux has to transfer the energy of the generating coil, called the primary, to a smaller output coil, called the secondary. The smaller secondary coil will develop a lower voltage than was sent to the primary coil. Since the overall power of the input and output is the same, the smaller

I plan to have a bipedal walker robot project in my next book on robotics, tentatively titled Pic-Robotics. In this chapter we will build a six-legged walker robot.

Each of the lawyers in these locations shares important information and files, which can lead to problems. According to Lewis Robbins, chief information officer of FMC, We have to back up on a daily basis. Someone will either accidentally delete or overwrite a document, which means that we need to go back and attempt to retrieve the data in a timely manner. This happens about six times a week. The key word in that sentence, according to Robbins, is timely. Because lawyers work with critical, sensitive information that can affect the outcomes of major cases or lawsuits and are generally strapped for time documents must be retrieved as soon as possible. This was a difficult task with FMC s original tape backup system. There were two major problems that we were running into, says Robbins. First, we were spending a lot of money on backup tapes. With the amount of use we were getting out of them, we were faced with the continual purchase of new tapes, as well as making a significant investment in multiple tape loaders. This was getting to be very, very expensive. Second, Robbins continues, the tape-based system proved to be very time-consuming. Whenever we wanted to retrieve a document that had been accidentally lost, it took, at times, up to a whole day, he says. This is so because someone had to physically retrieve the tape, bring it back to the office, and then search for the needed information. That takes a lot of effort and man-hours, and waiting for the necessary information to be retrieved is a very painful process for lawyers, he says.
